Kvåsfossen and the outdoor area – nature experiences around the waterfall

A visit to us is about more than what happens inside the mountain. Surrounding the center is Kvåsfossen and an outdoor area that offers great nature experiences – whether you want to feel the power of the waterfall, go for a hike, or just enjoy the view.

The waterfall and the gorge

From the center, a hiking trail leads up to Kvåsfossen, one of Southern Norway's largest waterfalls. At the edge, you can look straight down into the deep gorge and feel the power of the waterfall. When the water level is low, the potholes appear – pits in the rock that have been carved out by the river over thousands of years. In the middle of the river lies the enormous Kvåssteinen, which, according to legend, was placed there by a troll who wanted to block the salmon. Today, the stone serves as the foundation for the bridge over the waterfall.

Birdlife and hiking trails

Keep an eye out for the white-throated dipper, Norway's national bird, which nests by the waterfall and is often seen there. If you want to go further, the area has several marked hiking trails of varying difficulty. Summit hikes to Morsfjell and Ørnefjell offer a great view of the landscape. The outdoor area is open and accessible, with well-maintained paths and nice viewpoints. Feel free to bring a packed lunch – and plenty of time.
